Meeting Santa Claus is a rite of passage. It’s one of my fondest memories of my childhood. Since I was about five and my brother was three, my parents have taken us to South Coast Plaza to see Santa at Christmas. My little brother and I would count the seconds until it was time to go. We would get dressed up in our new Christmas outfits and all drive down to the mall. There was always a long line, but we didn’t care. It was always worth it. Plus along the way there were crafts to do and things to see. Santa’s village was amazing and incredibly festive. By the time it was our turn, we were on our best behavior and had our lists ready. So we took our turn and told Santa Claus what we wanted, took our picture, and then we rode the carousel. It was magical!
These were the memories that I couldn’t wait to create with my children. The magic of Christmas is one of my very favorite things in life. This year was our first time taking Aaliyah to see Santa Claus. Yes – she’s too young to understand the concept of Christmas, but George and I were excited to take her. It was a chance for us to start our own family tradition.
We chose a Monday night, because it seemed like a quieter night to attempt a visit to the mall. We made a family night of it, and took my mom, Krystal, and Shelby with us. Our wait was minimal, which was a huge plus. When it was Aaliyah’s turn, I was relieved to see that she wasn’t scared of Santa Claus. I didn’t wasn’t to torture her. Instead, it was Aaliyah who tormented poor Santa Claus. I stood by the photographer, trying to get her attention. I was caught up in my cat calls when I heard a woman exclaim, “she grabbed Santa’s beard!” I was mortified! And I was so worried we wouldn’t be able to get her to let go without leaving a bald spot on his chin. But to my dismay, she let go a few seconds later leaving Santa’s whiskers in tact. And he was a really good sport about it too. Although I couldn’t apologize it enough.
I’m sure years from now we will look back on this and all laugh. It is one of those priceless moments. The best part is that the photographer captured it he incident on camera. My favorite picture is of the moment she let go of Santa’s whiskers. His face is priceless and Aaliyah looks so innocent. Our baby girl is already full of surprises. Can’t wait to see what else she has in store for us.
